After our outing to Westerdale I took the dogs up to Cawthorne in the afternoon. Minnie stopped on this bridge to have a sniff around and she looked down the ditch that heads west of here her nose twitching as she checked out some scent on the air. Stopping here reminded me that this is actually an old track called Portergate that goes directly across the Roman camps. From what I’ve read it’s a medieval path, probably a trade route, though I don’t know where it came from or where it ends! There was a North York Moors Park ranger’s Land Rover in the car park today. I noticed as we walked up the path to the camps orange dots sprayed on tree trunks. I spoke to the ranger in the woods on the edge of the tabular hills. Last year a survey had been done on trees that were ready to come down either through having rotted or were damaged through the wind. He said he’d managed to simply push some over. Cawthorn No.1

Last September I was looking back through my iPhone photos of my visits to the Roman Camps at Cawthorne and was struck by how the place had changed over the time I’ve been walking the dogs there. The changes were not in the landscape itself so much as in the seasons, the weather and the light. My photos were just snapshots of the dogs mostly but I decided it would be an interesting project to document the place over a prolonged period of time.
