The River Irwell runs from its source on Deerplay Moor in Lancashire through Salford and Manchester to the River Mersey. In 2010 I walked the Irwell, mainly around my then home in Salford, photographing the river itself and surrounding areas. During the Industrial Revolution the river became badly polluted by toxic waste from the heavy industry along the riverbanks. Over the years many attempts have been made to clean up the river and at the time I photographed the last of the local industries were closing and wildlife had started to return. This was my last project before leaving Salford to return home to live in North Yorkshire.
